UXO & Debris Detection

SAND is highly experienced in Marine UXO and debris detection, with industry standard techniques. Using sidescan sonar to image the seabed for and gradiometers to detect for ferrous objects both exposed and buried.

However, a lack of diagnostic information leads to many non-UXO targets being designated as potential unexploded ordnance (pUXO) requiring mitigation through inspection or avoidance.

Offshore construction sites, including windfarms, often have 1000s of anomalies that cannot be conclusively characterised as non-pUXO without further investigation costing both time and money.

3D Chirp application

SAND’s 3D Chirp UXO survey reduces the number of potential unexploded ordnance requiring inspection and/or mitigation:

SAND can offer the additional service of the 3D Chirp to significantly reduce the number of potential unexploded ordnance that may need additional investigation by providing a target characterisation for each buried object.

By producing a three-dimensional seismic volume at decimetric resolution, not only can the volume provide characterisation of buried targets but can also be integrated into the pre-construction ground investigation by providing information on the sub-surface.

A 3D Chirp UXO survey demonstrates 100% success rate in detecting all objects including ferrous UXO; non-ferrous UXO; metal; wood; rope and rubble. Surrogate trials have demonstrated successful target identification down to object size of 50 x 15 cm in sandy gravels.

Target Characterisation

Targets can be quantitatively characterised in terms of:

  • Location
  • Burial depth
  • Dimensions
  • Shape
  • Orientation

And can be incorporated into gradiometer data to provide mag anomaly readings for each target to further aid characterisation.

High-quality & cost-effective

SAND’s 3D Chirp UXO survey provides dramatic project cost savings for UXO site surveys especially on sites contaminated with a mixture of UXO and debris.
